Joost Buis is a trombonist, improvisor, composer, bandleader and lap steel guitarist in Amsterdam.
He has played with a wide variety of Dutch groups and projects such as the Ab Baars Quartet, the Willem Breuker Kollektief, Sean Bergin & M.O.B., Corrie & de Brokken, Palinckx, Bite the Gnatze, New Cool Collective Bigband, the operas NOACH and HIERº of Guus Janssen, Ex Orkest, the Vera Vingerhoeds Quartet, Krang, The Ex & Guests & Getatchew Mekurya, Han Bennink and occasionally with Misha Mengelberg, George Lewis and Roswell Rudd.
Joost Buis leads four ensembles of his own, all with their own distinctive character: compact pieces and the challenge of big group improvisation in Astronotes, musical portraits of favourite trombonists in the quartet Sliphorn featuring Han Bennink, free improvisation in Snap, Crackle & Pop and exploring the combination of brass and woodwind sounds in the Joost Buis Tentet, the result of the North Sea Jazz Festival composition assignment 2006. Joost Buis also plays in a number of groups which are lead by others, for example Paul Pallesen's Bite the Gnatze, the Ab Baars Quartet with an Ellington program entitled 'Kinda Dukish' and the Spinifex Orchestra. More information
Since a few years Joost Buis' second instrument is the lap steel guitar, a small fretless slide guitar with Hawaiian origins. The similar sliding concept makes it a logical extension of the trombone into new (electronic) sound/color possibilities.
